Particpate To Create Wilmington

On Tuesday, May 14th the City of Wilmington, NC held a wide open public meeting that was organized very much in the way Occupy Wall Street general assemblies were held across the world almost two years ago. One of the most important concerns raised at this meeting was establishing a way to communicate the activities of the City government more clearly to our communities. After the meeting it was noted that many people in the city were not aware that Participate to Create Wilmington was happening even thought the City has a webpage for it on their website and a separate website has been constructed specifically for it.

Participate to Create Wilmington

Point of information: The African American community was economically alienated as a result of the 1898 coup, the civil rights movement helped but was not enough in Wilmington. As you can tell from the photo there were African Americans there, but nowhere near a true representation of their population in this city. Also lacking were a significant number of young adults but there were a few there helping to tow the line

Dozens of tables with seating awaited the public and each table had a facilitator who asked that each person write down on an index card desires and undesirable goals or conditions for the city. Each person got to share these items as the facilitator recorded them on easel boards.

Each page was taken and posted on walls in the room. Desired pages on one wall and undesired on another. Everybody was given 10 stickers to post beside the items they felt were the most important. When everybody finished all items that had four or more stickers beside them were read aloud to the room.

Among these were:

  • Get the City to persuade the county to distribute funds to the City schools more fairly
  • Promote and educate the community more about the Cooperative Business Model
  • Support offshore Wind Turbines and renewable energy BUSINESS
  • Continue the implementation of bicycle paths and lanes
  • Preserve greenspace, construction of buildings should be vertical to diminish urban sprawl
  • Titan Cement is UNdesired, reduce mercury, carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide pollution
  • Corporate rule of public education is UNdesired
  • City or County public TV with a fully accountable broadcast of issues taken up by the City and their actions; reach minorities and African American communities

The meeting convened with the announcement that the next meeting will be posted on the aforementioned website and should be in September.

A Fracking Shame

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources did a study, as directed by NC legislative Session Law 2011-276, which found that fracking can be done safely if proper regulation and the funding for it is in place. However, the study also concedes to the dangers. It’s interesting that one of the stipulations is to “Provide funding for any continued work on the development of a state regulatory program for the natural gas industry.” In a time of deep cuts to education, mass transit funding and toying with the destruction of social security this is something that our right wing government says is ok to tax people for. CORPORATE WELFARE

Every natural gas company is going to take advantage of the following exception that was just written into “regulation” standards by our corporate oligarchy.

“Require full disclosure of hydraulic fracturing chemicals and constituents to regulatory agencies and to local government emergency response officials prior to drilling. The state should encourage the industry to fully disclose the same information to the public and require public disclosure of hydraulic fracturing chemicals and constituents with the exception of trade secrets already protected under state law.”

People of southeastern North Carolina are coming together to show our state “representatives” that we do not accept their offer to allow fracking in the state of NC. We the people do not accept the fallout from such operations. It is well known what kind of horrors come with hydrolic fracturing and we will not have this in our state. Together we will put this behind us. We make our stand. We make a line in the sand. NO FRACKING!

On May 9th, 2012, occupiers from Wilmington, NC participated in the Showdown in Charlotte. People from across the country occupied the intersection of Trade and Tryon in front of the Bank of America shareholder meeting. Bank of America also is a financier of the Natural Gas industry.

We will be participating in a protest at College and Oleander intersection. Come anytime between 4 and 8pm, and stay as long as you can. It will be hot: bring a chair, an umbrella, wear cool clothes, bring cold drinks. And make your best anti-fracking signs!

Please come and help us show all of NC that the people of Wilmington are willing to boldly instruct our government on the way they should go. Politicians listen to their constituents because their jobs depend on election and reelection. Never forget that.

Frack No!

It was expected the likes of Thom Goolsby, Danny McComas and Carolyn Justice would vote for something as bad as fracking; but Susi Hamilton? What a fracking shame.

Fracking is not safe in geological formations like those we have in North Carolina. Any risk of damage to limestone shelves in proximity to shale formations will result in hazards like salt water intrusion into our aquifer. The Castle Hayne aquifer provides the fresh groundwater for all of southeastern NC and most of northeastern SC. The dead and dying cyprus trees around Wilmington and New Hanover county show what salt water intrusion can do. Although that intrusion is the result of rising sea levels and deep dredging of the Cape Fear, the result is similar. Salt water is bad for places where it shouldn’t be. We don’t have to look far to see how bad it can really get. The freshwater crisis in Miami, Dade County, Florida is a perfect example of how hard and expensive it can be to provide drinking water in areas lacking in fresh groundwater. Susi your fracking vote was wrong. You have made a serious error in judgement along with our other corporate sponsored representatives. Save the USA! Get the money out of politics! A corporation is not a person and money is not speech!
