Signmaking – Wearable Sign 101

This is for giggles, but it’s also a little of my voice. This is done entirely with stuff found around my house: including black trash bags, cardboard boxes (with red/black markers & red tempera paint), recycled computer paper, garden twine, grommets, and straight pins. Enjoy!

On a side note though, I do really love clothing and costumes. I just feel that clothing is such an outlet for expression of many types, certainly an art form despite many of the ready-wear atrocities of our consumerist age. It’s not that you judge a book by its cover, but that you make a cover that fits the book.  A garment can say a lot, but that’s a tangent for another day.

Step 1: Cut some cardboard apart in the shape of the garment. If you can’t visualize patterns, nows the time to buy one. :)

Step 2: Sew cardboard panels together.

**hint: slightly damp cardboard sews better than dry
Step 3: The panels are all sewed together.  Reinforce edges.

**I liked red, so I used red flooring tape, like you use to put down laminate floors– plus it was recycled, from, well, extra tape from putting down my floors

Step 4: Poke holes in reinforced areas. Same number on both sides.

Tip: Use something pointy :)

Step 5: Put grommets in holes.  This is for the lacing.

All grommets are in now.

Step 6: Break out the black permanent marker and add the lettering.
Clean up lettering, put on body to check that it reads ok in 3-D.

Step 7: Lace up the back. (Hard to do on yourself– harder to take a pic of your back!)

Step 8: Add a skirt made of ruffled black trash bags.  Overlay is task-stitched, made of recycled packing material from something or another I ordered (I save all that stuff).

Step 9: Make signs– many copied from our photos online– and affix ripped cardboard (brown– left over form making top– old boxes) and recycled computer paper (the white).  Permanent red and black markers used on signs.
Done! New sign complete.
I have been told that I lack some of the finesse involved in sign making, as mine are too pretty.  That’s just my voice though.  Says a lot & a little.  Enjoy!
